What Is a Podiatrist?

Strickland Podiatry is headed by a certified podiatrist. A podiatrist or doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), is a health care professional who focuses on the foot, ankle, and related body systems. As a foot care specialist, the podiatrist receives extensive training to be qualified to diagnose, treat, and prevent foot and ankle disorders through medical and surgical means.

After getting an undergraduate degree, a podiatrist must complete four years of education and receive a doctorate degree in a college of podiatric medicine. Many podiatrists obtain additional education with a postgraduate surgical residency program at an approved hospital or university.

Following their doctorate degree, podiatrists are required to pass national and state examinations in order to receive their license from the state in which they will practice. As per the American Podiatric Medical Association, there are over 17,800 practicing podiatrists in the US.

Podiatrists are in great demand today due to the rapidly aging population in the country. Foot disorders are also among the most prevalent and ignored health problems that affect the people in the US.
